The Students’ Union Government of Bayero University, Kano (SUG-BUK) strongly condemns the continued detention and prosecution of our fellow student, Maryam Isah Shehu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Maryam Isah Shehu is a 500-Level (final-year) student of the School of Continuing Education, Bayero University, Kano. She was arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik over an alleged charge of cyberbullying the Commission.
Of particular concern to the Students’ Union Government is that Maryam has spent thirty-five (35) days in EFCC custody, including nearly thirty (30) days in detention before she was arraigned before the court. She was subsequently remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre, where she is expected to remain until 31 August.
This development is particularly distressing given that Maryam is scheduled to commence her final examinations tomorrow, Saturday.
We therefore ask: Was Maryam accused of stealing, fraud, money laundering, or any other economic or financial crime?
While we acknowledge the right of relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute alleged offences in accordance with the law, the Students’ Union Government is deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding her prolonged detention and the potential impact on her education and final examinations.
SUG-BUK calls on the relevant authorities to urgently review the circumstances of her detention and facilitate her release, in accordance with due process and the law, so that she can sit for her final examinations without further hindrance.
The Students’ Union Government will continue to advocate for the rights, welfare, and academic interests of Bayero University students and will not relent in seeking a fair and lawful resolution to this matter.
Pls BUKites, let’s comment and reshare for our final year student who was detained by the EFCC for allegedly cyberbullying the agency.
Let it reach everywhere so she can be set free.
