The Nigerian Army has confirmed an unauthorised access to its official X account, warning the public against relying on suspicious information posted on the platform.
The breach was detected at about 5pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Army spokesperson, Col. Appolonia Anele.
Anele said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity breach, adding that immediate technical and protective measures had been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
She assured the public, media organisations and other stakeholders that efforts were underway to fully secure the account and restore exclusive administrative control to the Nigerian Army.
“In the interim, the public is advised to exercise caution and disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content emanating from the affected account, as such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army,” she said.
The Army spokesperson urged members of the public and the media to verify information attributed to the military through its other official communication channels until the situation is fully resolved.
She also reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting information integrity, maintaining operational security and ensuring responsible strategic communication.
The Army did not disclose details about the identity of those behind the attempted takeover or whether any sensitive information was compromised.
