Yes, every soldier represents the Nigerian state and the Commander-in-Chief (the President) through the chain of command in the Nigerian Armed Forces. The President is the ultimate authority over the military – not a political appointee (Section 218 of the 1999 Constitution).
The Minister is a political appointee and does not exercise any military authority over any member of the Military.
And this is also for everyone of you who disrespect Military Officers just because they are attached to your convoy etc. Just that you are giving that officer N50,000 doesn’t mean you should disrespect him. Every soldier is a symbol of our national identity and national discipline. Respect them and ensure that everyone around you respects them.
Gov. Wike owes the NATION an apology. He owes Mr. President an apology. He owes the soldier an apology. He can decide that no development will happen on that land – he has the right. But for today’s drama, he touched a sensitive part of our National Life. Even Mr. President cannot call a Nigerian Soldier a F00l. The military doesn’t forgive such open disrespect.
