Aishatu Umar, a mother of five from Kano, died early Tuesday after a pair of surgical scissors was discovered inside her abdomen weeks after a September operation at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.
Her family says she endured four months of severe abdominal pain, repeatedly receiving only pain‑relievers, and that scans only two days before her death revealed the retained instrument.
The hospital had scheduled a corrective surgery, but she passed away before it could be performed.
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board responded by ordering an immediate, transparent investigation and pledged that appropriate action would be taken if negligence is confirmed.
In a swift reaction, the family has publicly called for accountability from both the state government and health regulators, describing the case as “pure negligence” and demanding justice for Aishatu Umar.
