Five US lawmakers have introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, seeking to compel the Secretary of State to submit a comprehensive report on US efforts to address ongoing religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.
The bill, sponsored by Representatives Riley Moore, Chris Smith, and Tom Cole, highlights the systemic persecution of Christians in Nigeria, citing mass killings, kidnappings, and forced displacement perpetrated by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Fulani militant groups.
The proposed legislation requires the US Secretary of State to submit an annual report to Congress detailing American efforts to address Christian persecution in Nigeria, including assessments of Nigeria’s compliance with the International Religious Freedom Act.
The bill also mandates a review of US assistance to Nigeria to determine whether such support inadvertently enables or worsens religious persecution ¹ ².
The lawmakers behind the bill warn that the expansion of militant groups in Nigeria undermines US national security and foreign policy interests, destabilizes the region, and worsens the security situation across West Africa.
