A non-governmental organization, Global Improvement of Less Privileged Persons Initiative (GIOPPINI), has raised an alarm over the plumber situation of over 2 million homeless children sleeping in Kano streets.
These children, mostly Almajiri, are exposed to health risks, crime, and exploitation, with many who abandon school to scavenge for food.
The organization, led by Mohammed Ali Mashi, warns that the situation could lead to widespread insecurity and social unrest if not addressed .
Survey with The Northern Star online newspapers, however, identified several locations across Kano metropolis where these children dwell, including Race Course, Central Hotel, Railway Station, and Kofar Ruwa Parks. Mashi calls for urgent government intervention, including rehabilitation and reintegration programs, and a coordinated policy framework to regulate child movement and provide sustainable opportunities for vulnerable families.
