

Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, the revered mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, passed away on March 27, 2026, at the age of 100 in Cairo, Egypt, where she was receiving medical treatment.
Her death was announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who expressed gratitude for her life and requested prayers for her soul.
Hajiya Umma was a woman of strong values and faith, known for her discipline, humility, and devotion. She played a significant role in shaping the character of her children and grandchildren, and her influence was deeply felt within her family and community. As a matriarch, she was widely respected for her wisdom and kindness.
Her son, Nasir El-Rufai, is currently facing legal proceedings and was reportedly emotional during her burial. The funeral prayer was held at the National Mosque in Abuja on March 29, 2026, attended by prominent figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, Governor Umar Bago, former, Minister Pantami, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso as well ex Governor Suleiman Lamido, Emir’s, of Bida Gen. Yahya Abubakar and Sanusi Lamido .
Meanwhile, She was laid to rest at Gudu Cemetery. In swift reaction, Governor Uba Sani expressed his condolences to the El-Rufai family, describing Hajiya Umma as a devoted mother and matriarch with rare moral clarity and quiet strength. The burial was also attended by other dignitaries, including the 16th Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sunusi, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. ⁴
The death of Hajiya Umma comes at a challenging time for the El-Rufai family, as Nasir El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings and was granted temporary release from ICPC custody to attend the burial.
