The Kebbi State Hisbah Board has arrested six individuals, including a married woman, during a raid at a hotel in Birnin Kebbi over alleged immoral activities. The operation, carried out on May 14, 2026, was prompted by intelligence gathered by the agency following reports from members of the public.
The six suspects, comprising three men and three women, were apprehended at a hotel located behind the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi. Director of Shariah at the board, Sirajo Kamba, confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations are ongoing and necessary action will be taken in accordance with the law and the board’s regulations.
Kamba emphasized the need for stronger moral upbringing and fear of God in society, highlighting that one of the women arrested was married. He urged parents to closely monitor their children’s movements and activities to prevent them from engaging in behaviors that undermine societal values and dignity.
The raid is part of the Kebbi Hisbah Board’s efforts to enforce moral standards in the state. The board has been carrying out similar operations, with previous arrests made in April and February 2026.
The Hisbah Board’s activities have sparked mixed reactions, with some praising their vigilance while others question their approach. Critics argue that morality policing can be arbitrary and violate personal liberties, while supporters see it as necessary to maintain societal values.
The Kebbi State Government has supported the Hisbah Board’s mandate, announcing a N100 million donation to support its operations in October 2025. The board has vowed to continue carrying out its duties in accordance with the law and the teachings of Islam.
The six suspects are currently in custody, and their fate will be determined by the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
