A newly emerging terrorist group known as Sai Mallam has reportedly imposed a monthly levy of ₦5 million on at least 10 communities in Kebbi State, warning that anyone who refuses to pay could face deadly attacks and lose their farmlands.
The affected communities are located in Argungu and Zuru emirates, where residents say the group has become increasingly active after allegedly relocating to Kebbi earlier this year.
According to community members, the terrorists summoned local leaders and ordered each community to produce ₦5 million every month. They allegedly warned that failure to comply would lead to violent attacks and the seizure of farmlands.
Residents also claimed the group has been recruiting vulnerable youths by offering monthly allowances and food, while spreading extremist beliefs. Many of those reportedly recruited are said to be Almajiri children, including some from neighbouring countries.
The Kebbi State Government has confirmed the presence of the Sai Mallam group in parts of the state, with officials saying security agencies are working to contain the threat.
