Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State has inaugurated the state office of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), emphasizing the need for equitable distribution of development projects across the seven North-West states. The inauguration ceremony marks a significant milestone in the region’s development efforts.
The NWDC office, located in Kano, is expected to serve as a central hub for coordinating interventions across the North-West states. Governor Yusuf has donated a 1.9-hectare plot of land, valued at N3 billion, to the commission for the construction of its permanent headquarters.
In his remarks, Governor Yusuf highlighted the challenges facing the North-West region, including insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition, stressing the need for urgent interventions. He urged the NWDC management to prioritize projects that address socioeconomic development, social services, and environmental challenges.
The Governor also pledged to provide temporary office accommodation and necessary renovations to ensure the agency commences operations promptly. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for establishing the NWDC and commended the National Assembly for its swift approval.
NWDC Chairman, Alhaji Isma’il Lawal Abdullahi Yakawada, stated that their visit aimed to formally introduce the commission’s leadership and strengthen collaboration with the Kano State Government. He assured that the NWDC would work within its mandate to drive meaningful interventions benefiting Kano and other states in the region.
The Managing Director of the Commission, Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, appreciated the Governor’s gesture, describing it as a significant step towards ensuring the commission’s success. He emphasized the need for the NWDC to prioritize programs that directly impact the lives of the people.
The inauguration of the NWDC office has generated excitement in the region, with stakeholders hoping it will address the developmental challenges facing the North-West states. The commission’s establishment is seen as a timely intervention to address issues such as poverty, infrastructure deficits, and insecurity.
