A Gombe State court has reserved judgment in a lawsuit challenging former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami’s, candidacy as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Gombe State.
The suit was filed by Usman Aliyu Garry, a PDP member, who alleges that Pantami’s candidacy is invalid due to his previous membership in the All Progressives Congress (APC). Pantami had withdrawn from the APC governorship primary election, citing irregularities, and subsequently joined the PDP, where he was declared the governorship candidate.
The APC has disputed Pantami’s resignation, claiming he remains an APC member. The PDP, however, insists that Pantami has fulfilled all necessary requirements to contest the election.
The court, led by Justice Amina Aliyu Mohammed, had fixed July 9 for hearing the suit. The parties involved are expected to present their arguments and evidence ¹.
Pantami’s emergence as the PDP candidate has sparked controversy, with some PDP aspirants alleging that the process was flawed. The former minister has pledged to prioritize equity and good governance if elected
The lawsuit highlights the complexities of party politics and candidate eligibility in Nigeria. The court’s decision will determine Pantami’s fate in the upcoming election.
