The internal crisis in Niger State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) has deepened ahead of the 2027 elections, with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago accused of imposing candidates, triggering grievances and defections.
Aggrieved stakeholders loyal to former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello have formed the Niger Rescue Movement (NRM), led by former Chief of Staff Mikail Bmitosahi, which has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The NRM announced it will mobilize across all 25 LGAs to stop Bago’s re-election, citing failures in security, jobs, education, health, and infrastructure. Bago has accused loyalists of the former governor of fighting his government, warning that he could probe them but chose peace instead.
More aspirants have petitioned the national leadership, with Sen. Mohammed Bima claiming no primary was held in Niger South. Rep aspirant Shehu Auna has gone to court over the Magama/Rijau ticket and was later dismissed from the party.
Ironically, Bago himself has complained that the list of candidates sent from Minna was tampered with in Abuja, with different names declared at the national headquarters. The governor met stakeholders on Saturday to reconcile aggrieved members, alongside Minister of Information Mohammed Idris Malagi and other leaders.
The crisis has raised concerns about the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections. The ADC, which has emerged as a rallying platform for some prominent opposition figures, is facing its own set of challenges, including court battles over leadership and internal structure ¹ ².
The situation highlights the complexities of Nigerian politics, where party infighting and power struggles often overshadow policy issues and governance.
