The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has called for mandatory drug testing for individuals seeking to get married and students applying to tertiary institutions to curb the spread of substance abuse.
Marwa made this statement in Dutse during the launch of a campaign against substance abuse and promotion of good values. He emphasized that this measure would help reduce substance abuse among young people.
The NDLEA boss also revealed that the agency has seized drugs worth N60 billion in the past two months. He added that substance abuse has become a menace in Nigeria, and it’s crucial to take steps to address it.
Marwa announced that NDLEA will soon start conducting drug tests for national service participants and individuals seeking to get married. This move aims to reduce substance abuse among young people.
Kano State has been identified as the second-highest state with substance abuse cases in Nigeria. Marwa urged parents to monitor their children and seek drug testing to identify and address the issue promptly.
The NDLEA has seized drugs worth N1.5 trillion in the past 18 years, thanks to the agency’s efforts to curb substance abuse.
Marwa warned that the agency will continue to crack down on substance abusers and traffickers, urging them to reform or face consequences. He emphasized that NDLEA will collaborate with international partners to combat substance abuse, citing support from countries like the UAE.
