Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared a state of emergency on drug abuse as part of renewed efforts to curb the growing menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the state.
The governor made the declaration while unveiling a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting the lives of young people and restoring public safety. He also signed an Executive Order designed to strengthen the state’s response to the production, distribution and consumption of illicit drugs.
Governor Yusuf described drug abuse as a major social and security challenge that has contributed to rising cases of crime, violence and youth unemployment, stressing that urgent intervention had become necessary.
He said the Executive Order would provide a legal framework for coordinated action among security agencies, health institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders in the fight against drug-related crimes.
According to the governor, the state government will intensify surveillance on known drug hotspots, strengthen law enforcement operations and ensure that individuals involved in the illegal drug trade are brought to justice.
He added that the administration would also invest in rehabilitation and counselling programmes to help victims of substance abuse recover and reintegrate into society, noting that prevention and treatment are as important as enforcement.
Governor Yusuf called on parents, religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and community groups to support the government’s campaign by educating young people on the dangers of drug abuse and reporting suspicious activities.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with federal agencies and development partners to eliminate the drug menace and create a healthier and safer environment for residents of Kano State.
The governor expressed confidence that with sustained collaboration and public support, the new measures would significantly reduce drug abuse and illicit trafficking while safeguarding the future of Kano’s youth and promoting lasting peace and development across the state.
