KANO — Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the payment of ₦200,000 to every bride participating in the state’s Mass Wedding Programme. The package is intended to serve both as dowry and as startup capital to help the new wives begin small-scale businesses.
The announcement was made by the Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, during a sensitization workshop for brides and grooms on marriage ethics and family responsibilities. The event was held at the Kano State Government House.
According to Sheikh Daurawa, the ₦200,000 grant for each bride is part of the governor’s broader plan to reduce the financial burden of marriage and to promote self-reliance among young families from the very beginning of their union.
“His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has graciously approved the sum of two hundred thousand naira (₦200,000) for each bride under the Mass Wedding Programme,” Daurawa told participants. “The money is to be used for payment of dowry and also as capital to start a trade or business.”
The Hisbah boss also revealed that the grooms have not been left out of the support package. Each groom will receive 10 yards of shadda fabric, a cap, a pair of shoes, and food items to help them settle down comfortably.
“This assistance is designed to make it easier for them to start married life without unnecessary hardship,” he explained. “The government understands the economic realities, and this is a direct intervention to support responsible family formation.”
Sheikh Daurawa said the cash and material support aligns with Governor Yusuf’s commitment to strengthening family stability, reducing poverty, and building a stronger society through decent and affordable marriages. He noted that high marriage costs have been a major barrier for many young people in the state.
The workshop itself focused on educating the intending couples on Islamic marital rights, conflict resolution, family planning, and the responsibilities of husband and wife. Religious scholars and social welfare officers took participants through the guidelines expected of them after the wedding.
Officials say the Mass Wedding Programme has, over the years, helped thousands of low-income residents in Kano to marry in a dignified and organized manner. With this new financial support, the state government hopes to expand the impact by ensuring that beneficiaries do not just marry, but also have a foundation to sustain their homes.
In his remarks, Daurawa commended Governor Yusuf for prioritizing social welfare and urged the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously. He added that monitoring mechanisms will be put in place to ensure the money is used for its intended purpose — marriage expenses and income-generating ventures.
The latest approval is expected to benefit hundreds of couples in the next phase of the Mass Wedding Programme, further cementing Kano’s model as one of the largest state-sponsored marriage support initiatives in Nigeria.
