A fresh crisis has erupted in the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, just months to the next election, with Governor Abba Yusuf’s decision to suspend three local government chairmen triggering fresh defections and internal tensions.
Reports by The Northern Star online newspapers, indicate that the suspension has sparked unease within the party, as some key figures allege that certain leaders are pursuing political activities that contradict the party’s objectives. The timing, coming so close to the polls, has heightened fears of losing loyalists.
The three suspended chairmen were not given official reasons at the time of their suspension. However, sources within the government and the party claim the action was linked to alleged misconduct, specifically accusations that they were funding the New Nigeria People’s Democratic Coalition, NDC.
It was further alleged that the chairmen remain loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP and a dominant political force in Kano politics. That connection has made the suspension a politically sensitive issue within APC ranks.
From all indications, Governor Abba is likely to lose several loyalists as a result of the development. Party insiders say many grassroots mobilizers who were aligned with the suspended chairmen are now reconsidering their stance ahead of the election.
The development has deepened existing divisions in Kano APC. Some stakeholders argue the governor’s action was necessary to enforce discipline, while others view it as a political purge aimed at silencing dissenting voices within the party.
Political Analysts base in kano says the rift could weaken the APC’s structure in key local government areas if not quickly resolved. With election activities picking up, maintaining party unity will be critical for the governor’s camp to retain influence across the state. As of now, the suspended chairmen have not issued a formal public response.
Meanwhile, party elders are said to be making behind-the-scenes efforts to mediate and prevent further fallout that could cost the APC more support before the votes
