The Chairman of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, has announced that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the release of ₦300 million to support brides under the Hisbah Board’s Mass Wedding Scheme.
Sheikh Daurawa made the disclosure on Tuesday during a pre-marital orientation programme for prospective brides and grooms. The event was held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, and was fully sponsored by the Kano State Government.
The programme, titled “Preventing Challenges in the Mass Wedding Scheme for a Peaceful Family Life,” brought together hundreds of intending couples who are set to benefit from the next phase of the scheme. The Chairman said the funds are meant to assist the brides with basic needs as they begin their new homes.
According to him, the support is part of government’s commitment to reduce the financial burden of marriage and promote stability in families. He noted that the orientation was designed to prepare couples for the responsibilities of marriage and to prevent common problems that often affect newly married homes.
“The Mass Wedding Scheme is not just about reducing the cost of marriage. It is also about building homes that will be peaceful and sustainable,” Sheikh Daurawa told the gathering. He urged the participants to pay close attention to the teachings and counseling provided during the programme.
The Mass Wedding Scheme in Kano has a history that dates back more than a decade. It was introduced to assist low-income residents who struggle to meet the expenses of traditional marriage ceremonies. Over the years, the initiative has sponsored thousands of weddings across the 44 local government areas of the state.
Under previous administrations, the scheme gained wide acceptance as a social intervention that addressed poverty, late marriage, and social vices. Beneficiaries typically receive support that includes dowry payment, household items, and in some cases, foodstuff, while the government coordinates the wedding ceremonies collectively to cut costs.
Officials say the current ₦300 million allocation will cover support for brides in the upcoming batch and strengthen monitoring to ensure the funds are used for their intended purpose. The Hisbah Board is expected to work with community and religious leaders to verify beneficiaries and provide follow-up counseling after the weddings.
The orientation programme will continue in the coming days ahead of the mass ceremony. Our reporter gathered that government officials described the scheme as one of the administration’s efforts to promote social welfare and family values in Kano.
