The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday led a large-scale mass wedding ceremony for 1,500 widows and young women in Kano.
The event was organized jointly by the Kano State Government and the Kano State Hisbah Board as part of efforts to support vulnerable members of society and promote stable family structures.
Describing the initiative, Governor Yusuf called it a landmark act of compassion and social welfare. He said the program was designed to restore dignity to families that had been affected by hardship, while also reinforcing moral values and community cohesion across the state.
According to the Governor, the mass wedding reflects his administration’s determination to reduce the economic burden of marriage for the less privileged. He noted that by covering the costs and providing support, the government is creating pathways for people to establish homes with respect and honor, guided by Islamic teachings and Hausa cultural values.
In a symbolic gesture during the ceremony, Governor Yusuf acted as the proxy groom for the first couple. He formally sought the bride’s hand from her guardian, His Highness the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II. The Emir granted the request in line with Islamic provisions, marking the official start of the mass nuptials.
Earlier in the day, Emir Sanusi II delivered the Friday sermon to a gathering that included the prospective couples and their families. He urged the newlyweds to build their unions on faith, patience, mutual respect, and compassion. He emphasized that strong and peaceful families are the bedrock of a peaceful and prosperous society.
The Commander of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, explained the process behind the program. He said every beneficiary underwent thorough screening to ensure compliance with both religious and legal requirements. The board, he added, worked to verify eligibility and readiness before approving participation in the wedding.
Spiritual guidance was also central to the event. The Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, led special prayers for the new couples. He prayed for divine guidance, blessings, and lasting peace in their homes as they begin this new chapter of life together.
Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the state government. They described the mass wedding as a life-changing opportunity that would have otherwise been out of reach. Many said the support has given them hope to start a new life with dignity, security, and optimism for the future.

Officials of Hisbah who comment on the activities of the marriage says similar interventions will continue as part of efforts to uplift communities and strengthen unity across Kano State.
