The Kano State Government has declared its support for the Federal Government in moves to stop alleged attempts by private individuals to take over part of the Afforestation Programme Coordinating Unit complex in the state.
The position was made public after the Federal Ministry of Environment raised concerns over what it described as an unlawful move to take possession of a section of the APCU complex located in Janbulo, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano.
According to reports by DAILY NIGERIAN, the ministry alerted authorities that certain “private interests” were making claims to a portion of the facility, which is a federal asset under the afforestation programme.
In response, Kano State officials said the land and structures within the APCU complex are critical to ongoing environmental and climate programmes in the state and cannot be ceded to private ownership.
The APCU complex in Janbulo serves as a coordinating center for tree planting, desertification control, and other federal afforestation projects aimed at combating the effects of climate change across northern Nigeria.
State government representatives stressed that allowing private takeover would undermine years of investment by both the federal and state governments in environmental protection and job creation linked to the programme.
Officials also noted that the complex houses equipment, nurseries, and administrative offices used to support communities in Kano and neighboring states that are most affected by drought and land degradation.
The Federal Ministry of Environment has called for immediate intervention to secure the premises and to identify those behind the alleged takeover attempt, warning that such actions set a bad precedent for public assets nationwide.
With the backing of the Kano government, authorities are now expected to coordinate with security agencies and relevant ministries to verify land titles, reinforce boundaries, and ensure the facility remains under federal control for its intended public purpose.
