More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to seek re-election in the 2027 presidential election, citing worsening economic hardship and insecurity across the country.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a national conference on “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections” held in Kano on Sunday.
The conference was organised by the Ko Da Naka movement, which promotes good governance and community development, in collaboration with AFAQ Educational Foundation.
According to the communiqué made available to newsmen, the clerics said the current administration has failed to ease the unbearable hardship, rising cost of living and security challenges confronting Nigerians.
They also decried the mass departure of skilled professionals, popularly known as Japa, attributing it to lack of opportunities and deteriorating living conditions under the government.
The gathering assessed President Tinubu’s two years in office and concluded that Nigerians need new leadership with capacity to address hunger, inflation and insecurity.
The clerics warned voters to hold the government accountable at the polls in 2027 and not to be swayed by political inducements or religious sentiments.
They urged religious leaders to remain independent, speak truth to power, and prioritize the welfare of citizens over political endorsement.
As of press time, the Presidency has not officially reacted to the communiqué issued by the over 1,000 clerics in Kano.
