Hillary Clinton has accused President Donald Trump’s administration of attempting to “cover up” its management of documents connected to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“Release the documents. They are dragging their feet,” the former Secretary of State stated during an interview with the BBC in Berlin, where she was attending the annual World Forum.
The White House responded by asserting that their release of the documents has done “more for the victims than Democrats ever have.”
Earlier this month, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) released millions of new documents related to Epstein.
At that time, the deputy attorney general noted that three million pages were withheld due to the presence of personal medical records, explicit depictions of child abuse, or other sensitive materials that could compromise ongoing investigations.
When asked if Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor should testify before a congressional committee, Hillary Clinton replied, “I believe everyone who is asked to testify should do so.”
Being mentioned in the documents does not imply wrongdoing, and Andrew has consistently denied any misconduct.
Although the committee cannot force him to appear, they have pressured the Clintons to comply, which they agreed to last month.
Bill Clinton is scheduled to testify on February 27, while Hillary Clinton will appear the day before.
A proposed vote to hold the Clintons in contempt of Congress for initially refusing to testify was postponed after they agreed to appear. This will mark the first time a former US president has testified before a congressional panel since Gerald Ford in 1983.
Hillary Clinton emphasized their preference for the congressional hearing to be public rather than a private deposition. “We will attend, but we believe it would be better to have it in public,” she told the BBC.
Republican committee chair James Comer accused the Clintons of “delaying,” claiming they “caved” as a contempt vote was approaching.
“I just want it to be fair,” Hillary Clinton stated. “I want everyone to be treated equally.”
“We have nothing to hide. We have repeatedly called for the full release of these documents. We believe that transparency is the best remedy.”
The former presidential candidate suggested that she and her husband are being used as a distraction from Trump.
“Look at this shiny object. We’re going to focus on the Clintons, even Hillary Clinton, who never met the man.”
Hillary Clinton mentioned that she had met Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s convicted associate, “a few times.”
Bill Clinton, who was mentioned in the Epstein documents, acknowledged knowing Epstein but claimed he severed ties two decades ago.
Neither Clinton has been accused of any wrongdoing by Epstein’s abuse survivors, and both have denied having knowledge of his criminal activities at the time.
