The Gombe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, held a closed-door caucus meeting yesterday where party stakeholders discussed the 2027 political direction, with Jamilu Gwamna emerging as the name gaining traction as a likely successor to Governor Inuwa Yahaya.
Sources at the meeting said the deliberations centered on continuity, party cohesion, and the need to maintain the integrity and respect traditionally associated with Gombe elders in selecting leadership.
Jamilu Gwamna, who has long been regarded by elders for his adherence to their counsel, was repeatedly cited as a figure who respects institutional decorum and stakeholder consensus.
Party insiders recalled that Gwamna’s decision to leave the state 20 years ago after elders requested he go on exile to Kaduna was viewed as a demonstration of maturity and respect for authority, a trait many say is rare in current politics.
The caucus also reflected on the recent withdrawal of Prof. Isa Pantami from the gubernatorial race, with members describing it as a sign of political maturity that should guide the party’s succession planning.
Discussions were not without tension, as some stakeholders raised concerns over attempts to use force and intimidation in influencing the process, recalling similar tactics allegedly deployed in the past by loyalists of former governor Danjuma Goje.
Journalists present noted that the bond between Gwamna and the elders has consistently placed him in a position where his actions are shaped by stakeholder input rather than unilateral ambition.
While no formal endorsement was announced, the consensus from yesterday’s meeting suggests that if the APC follows the elders’ decorum, Jamilu Gwamna stands as a frontrunner with the credibility and respect needed to sustain the party’s hold on Gombe.
