A top northern traditional ruler, Godwin Vonga, has been assassinated in Plateau State, Nigeria. He was attacked by gunmen along the Timshat-Mabudi Road while returning home after dropping his children at school.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, with residents describing it as devastating and unacceptable. The killing has raised concerns over the escalating insecurity in Plateau State, with many calling for urgent action to address the situation.
The Chairman of Langtang South Local Government Area, Nanfa Nbin, condemned the killing, calling it “barbaric and unacceptable”. He urged security agencies to take immediate action to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Security operatives have been deployed to affected areas, and investigations are ongoing. The police have yet to release any information about the suspects or motives behind the attack.
The assassination of Godwin Vonga is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Plateau State. Several rural communities have experienced deadly raids, leading to widespread displacement and loss of life.
Traditional rulers in the North have previously expressed frustration over the killings, with the Sultan of Sokoto calling for decisive action to address insecurity. The Sultan’s call for action has been echoed by many, who are demanding that the government takes concrete steps to protect citizens.
The Plateau State Government has assured citizens that it is doing everything possible to address the security situation. However, many are skeptical, citing the government’s inability to prevent previous attacks.
The assassination of Godwin Vonga has also raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the state. Many are asking why the traditional ruler was not provided with adequate security despite his high profile.
The incident has also sparked fears of further attacks, with many residents living in fear for their lives. The situation remains tense, with security agencies on high alert as they try to prevent further violence.
