A violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma Town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, has resulted in the death of eight persons, including one farmer and seven herders. The incident occurred on June 22, 2026, at about 3 p.m. when a herder, Yaron Buba Dogo, allegedly allowed his cattle to stray into a farmland, destroying crops.
The confrontation escalated when the farmer, Alh. Aminu Ala, was fatally stabbed in the neck. An angry mob then attacked the herder, killed him, and set his body ablaze, sparking further violence.
The mob carried out attacks on members of the affected community, resulting in the deaths of four additional persons, whose bodies were burned beyond recognition. Two more corpses were later recovered from a farmland outside Gulma Town.
Security operatives intervened, rescuing five persons, including one woman, who were trapped during the incident. A joint security operation has been deployed to the area, and a curfew has been imposed to maintain peace and prevent further escalation ¹ ².
Normalcy is gradually returning to the area, with patrols and surveillance ongoing. The Police Commissioner, CP Umar M. Hadejia, has urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that all persons found culpable will be brought to justice.
The incident highlights the recurring tensions between farmers and herders in Nigeria, often fueled by disputes over land use and grazing routes. The Kebbi State Government has condemned the violence and is working to restore peace.
Investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings. The Police have appealed to residents to report any grievances through official channels rather than taking the law into their own hands.
