Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has established a Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to combat the growing menace of substance abuse and drug-related crimes in the state. The task force, chaired by Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, will provide a coordinated multi-agency framework to disrupt illicit drug networks and accelerate prosecution of offenders .
The task force comprises 20 members, including representatives from security agencies, health organizations, and community leaders. Its primary objectives include strengthening intelligence gathering, identifying and dismantling drug trafficking networks, and promoting rehabilitation and support services for affected individuals.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that drug abuse is a significant threat to the future of young people and reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling the challenge through enforcement, prevention, and community participation. He urged task force members to discharge their responsibilities with commitment and professionalism.
The task force will lead public awareness campaigns targeting students, youths, and vulnerable groups, and collaborate with religious and traditional institutions to promote rehabilitation and support services.
Kano State has been severely affected by drug abuse, with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reporting a 16% prevalence rate in the state. The task force aims to reduce this rate through sustained advocacy and public enlightenment campaigns.
The establishment of the task force is part of Governor Yusuf’s renewed commitment to combating drug abuse and related crimes in Kano State. The government has also vowed to take decisive action against drug traffickers and dealers.
In a related development, the Kano State Joint Task Force Committee for Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation has arrested 78 suspects in a four-day operation aimed at tackling substance abuse and street thuggery across the state .
