The Nigerian government is revamping the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a new orientation structure aimed at equipping graduates with practical skills and preparing them for the workforce. The Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, announced that the NYSC orientation camp will be restructured into three phases .
The first phase, spanning two weeks, will focus on civic responsibility, national values, and leadership development. This will be followed by a two-week career mapping, financial literacy, business planning, and access to finance program. The final phase will provide specialized training based on each corps member’s chosen career stream.
Corps members will select one of 11 newly created specialized streams upon registration, including Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, and Tech and Digital Corps, among others. These streams are designed to equip graduates with practical skills tailored to their academic backgrounds and career interests.
The reforms also review deployment procedures, taking into account prevailing security realities. This aims to ensure that corps members are posted to safe locations and can effectively serve their country.
The NYSC reform is part of the government’s efforts to modernize the scheme and make it more relevant to Nigeria’s evolving workforce needs. The reforms are expected to be implemented in phases from 2026 to 2028.
The government has also proposed the introduction of a Teachers’ Corps and Medical Corps for NCE-certified graduates and healthcare professionals, respectively. These initiatives aim to address critical gaps in education and healthcare delivery.
The NYSC has been a vital institution in promoting national unity and youth development since its inception in 1973. The reforms are expected to enhance its impact and make it more effective in serving the nation.
